Musicial Memory Lane

"Funny how a melody sounds like a memory..."

Have you ever been sitting around, minding your own business, and a song comes on that just bitch slaps you back in time?

Of course you have, everyone has.

There are songs that no matter how much time has passed or how many times I hear it, always makes me think of one particular moment in time.

There are 2 songs I associate with my husband. There is of course "our song". When we were dating we were out at a bar and the DJ was taking requests. My husband (then BF) requested the song, even though I told him not to. I knew that a rowdy college crowd would not be down with it on a Friday night. So he requested it and they played it. Until, LITERALLY, people were booing and throwing balled up napkins to the DJ until he'd change it.
Travis- Flowers in the Window

Followed on it's heels by the song we danced the first dance to in our wedding:
Dream a Little Dream (In French, because we're cultured like that)

I lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a few years and while I was there I met some of the most amazing people ever. When I moved it was one of the hardest times in my life. The last night I was there a group of my friends gathered at my house. Two of the guys brought their guitars and sang Good Riddance (Time of my life) by Greenday. I cried like a pansy. When I'm alone, sometimes I still tear up a bit.

You know when you're a teenager and everything is dirty and even the word "sex" can make you giggle and blush? Well, Sex and Candy came out and we all loved it. One Friday night at the mall with my bffs Matt and Holly I bought the CD. We sat outside Books A Million with the lyric sheet singing that song over and over louder and louder. Delinquents I say. Delinquents!

The first cruise I went on there was this annoying guy that would get up every night at dinner, steal the microphone and shout "BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY ROCKIN' EVERYWHERE!!!" This was when that horrendous song had just come out and my friend and I that were on the cruise had never heard it before. The crowd was mixed. Some laughed, some were annoyed. By the third night everyone was annoyed, by the forth night my friend calmly folded her napkin, stood up, smoothed her dress and while he was in the middle of shouting she shouted, even louder: "BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY- YOUR MAMA TAUGHT YOU NO MANNERS! SIT DOWN!" to which she received a standing ovation for all of the dining room, save that one table.

The week I turned 21 this was a HUGE club hit. The week I turned 21 I was chocolate-wasted every night and shaking my ass like it was my job in clubs throughout Wilmington, NC. I don't really remember a lot of that... I just know I was told it happened.

Probably the one moment in time that changed my musical life was the first time I heard Champagne Supernova by Oasis. I was in the backseat of my parents car being driven to the mall with my friend Holly and my sister in the middle in her car seat thing. I made eye contact with my dad in the rear-view mirror and I said "Where were you while we were getting high?" and he stated "At home with a bat". Oasis, luv4eva.

  2. It's crazy how just one short song can bring back a ton of vivid memories. I swear every time I hear Marilyn Manson's "Dope Hat" I get an acid flashback....

  3. Meanwhile, I can't listen to Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) without rolling my eyes as that was anyone and everyone's graduation song in the late 90s/early 2000s, and now continues to be the cheesy 'parting' song.
